Bedtime and Switching Off

So, I am not a good sleeper at all. I love sleep, I love it to pieces. However, I’m just terrible at falling asleep. I always end up staying up far too late doing work or just procrastinating, watching Netflix. Even when I sleep I never feel fully rested. It seems to be that I will be so tired all day and then when it comes to a reasonable time to sleep, my body is just like nope. When I TRY to go to sleep at a reasonable time, it results in me laying awake for hours before I do so. This usually consists of me forming a to-do list in my head of things I want to get done, or just stressing over stupid situations. My brain is no chill, yeah hi I have anxiety.

This is something that effects me a lot. As you probably can imagine it really disturbs my day, my week, my life. I know this is something so many people suffer with as we are a stressed out generation and sleep can be so hard for us to just turn off from our busy lives. In fact, 1 in 3 people actually struggle with poor sleep. For that reason I wanted to share with you all some things I’ve been trying out to help me get a little more zen I guess and get extra shut eye.

(By the way this is not sponsored at all, I just really love how much these products have helped me with my anxiety and sleeping. It’s such a small thing that I didn’t think simply a scent could help so much but it really has and if this can help at least one person then that means a lot to me.)

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is all about the power of plants. It’s taking plant materials and breaking them down into oils which can be used for physical and mental well-being.

The word ‘aromatherapy’ was first used in the 1920’s by French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefossé, following a lucky accident in his laboratory. Gattefossé set his arm on fire during one of his experiments and in a panic, dipped the burn in to the nearest available cool liquid – in this case, lavender essential oil. He immediately noticed the cooling and soothing properties of the oil, striking a long-term interest in essential oils in medicinal treatments.

The use of these oils date back thousands of years and were used for so many different uses. The Egyptians even used these scented oils to preserve the dead. The Chinese may have been one of the first cultures to use aromatic plants for well-being. Their practices involved burning incense to help create harmony and balance.

This is the Relaxing Rollerball with Lavender by the Botanics range at Boots. This little roll-on is my absolute hero and I take it everywhere with me, not just using it before bed. The blend of lavender and lavandin oils is great at helping me relax in stressful situations, helps relieve my headaches, and helps me to unwind before bed.

The benefit of the rollerball over just an oil is that it’s going to be absorbed a lot more quickly, which is ideal for stressful situations like if I’m having a panic attack. The rubbing mechanism of aromatherapy roll-ons on pressure points activates the essential oils and stimulates blood circulation in that area. Essential oil molecules are able to pass through the outer epidermal layers, into the capillaries from where they are carried to the brain. The fact that they are also inhaled at the same time, results in the fast-acting nature of essential oil roll-ons.

Aside from the rollerball, I also grabbed a Body, Space and Pillow Spray again in Lavender. I use this product every night before bed. Just a few sprays are all you need and I’ll spray some above our bed and pillows so it feels the room but yet softly distributes on the bed for a relaxing aroma. Even my boyfriend has commented on how more relaxed and easily he can sleep when I use it so I really advise.

Something I definitely want to invest in is a diffuser for our room. I’ve seen one by the brand Tisserand Aromatherapy and it’s on my wish list. I also want to try a few other scents from this brand as they’re still really good pricing for oils. There’s so many different scents for different things, such as ones that make you feel more awake and active, ones that relieve stress, even ones that make you feel more sensual. It’s all about trying different scents and seeing what works best for you. I have a Pure Botanical Oil in Lavender by this brand and I’m really happy with this. This can be mixed with blending oils or used in diffuses. I also like adding some drops to my bath with this when I want to be super relaxed.

Showertime

This product is a new one for me and I used it for the first time last week. I find showers pretty relaxing anyway as it’s a little time to just escape my thoughts for a bit and makes me feel better. This product is one of Lush’s Shower Jelly’s and it’s the Deep Sleep one.

Now Lush products can be a bit hit and miss for me as a customer if I’m brutally honest. I find there stuff can be overpriced, and don’t always work. HOWEVER… yes however, this product worked for me and I love it. Would I say it’s a miracle body wash, no. But this shower jelly helps me unwind and get into a perfect mood before bed. In conjunction with my pillow spray and such, I am so relaxed by the time I get into bed which helps me fall asleep a lot quicker with no stress.

So more information about this Deep Sleep Shower Jelly… It’s packed with blue chamomile and fine lavender oil, which has been scientifically proven to reduce stress and calm the mind. This means that when you step into that hot shower on a night, you’ll feel your mind begin to unwind. It’s also laced with cleansing orange juice to cut through the grime that the day put on you, and neroli oil from a bitter orange tree, which is meant to provide a tranquillising effect. Mixed together, all of these ingredients will help you drift off for a good night’s sleep and send you towards soothing dreams. And the colour of the jelly itself is so pretty which just makes everything better.

An Extra Kick

Now sometimes when things get a little more tough these things aren’t going to work and that’s just because life can be hella stressful and I need something a little more to help me turn over. I have been prescribed sleeping tablets however I don’t like the idea of taking them unless very necessary as they make me feel a strange and very awful the next day. This is a personal thing and they aren’t for me.

Now I’m not even sure how I came across these but I am so very happy I did. So Kalms is a company who sell products all about helping you relax whether anxiety in the day time, or restlessness at night. I’ve been taking their Kalms Night One A Day Tablets and these have worked for me so well. When I’m feeling extra stressed these will relax me before bed. I usually take one an hour or so before I want to sleep so it gets in my system. They contain Valerian Root which is known for helping relax and relieve restlessness which is great for helping you sleep.

These are great because they help you sleep without like knocking you out, and they aren’t going to leave you feeling groggy or drowsy the next day which is SUCH a positive. Again, some people have found these haven’t worked for them, and they can have side effects for some people. But for me this is a great alternative to sleeping tablets I don’t like taking. So if you are in the same position and are having real difficulty sleeping I’d try these out.

Thank you for reading as always it means a lot for me. Like I said at the beginning, I wanted to write this blog post for a while because these are things that really help me. If it helps at least one other person I’ll be so so happy. I also had a lot of fun writing this one strangely. Please take the time to share this as it could help anyone. I wish I’d know about the aromatherapy and such earlier as it never struck me it was something that could help with my anxiety and sleeping.

Thank you x
